Enhanced performance in fusion plasmas through turbulence suppression by megaelectronvolt ions

چکیده

Alpha particles with energies on the order of megaelectronvolts will be main source plasma heating in future magnetic confinement fusion reactors. Instead fuel ions, most energy alpha is transferred to electrons plasma. Furthermore, can also excite Alfvénic instabilities, which were previously considered detrimental performance device. Here we report improved thermal ion presence ions and strong fast ion-driven instabilities recent experiments Joint European Torus. Detailed transport analysis these reveals turbulence suppression through a complex multi-scale mechanism that generates large-scale zonal flows. This holds promise for more economical operation reactors dominant particle ultimately cheaper electricity. Experiments at Torus tokamak show highly energetic

Critically balanced ion temperature gradient turbulence in fusion plasmas.

Scaling laws for ion temperature gradient driven turbulence in magnetized toroidal plasmas are derived and compared with direct numerical simulations. Predicted dependences of turbulence fluctuation amplitudes, spatial scales, and resulting heat fluxes on temperature gradient and magnetic field line pitch are found to agree with numerical results in both the driving and inertial ranges. Evidenc...

Stark Broadening of Hydrogenic Spectral Lines by Langmuir Turbulence in Magnetic Fusion Plasmas: Diagnostic Possibilities

We derive the dynamical Stark width and shift of hydrogenic spectral lines caused by Langmuir turbulence in magnetic fusion plasmas. We show that this additional broadening mechanism can dominate over the Stark broadening by the plasma microfield, theories of the latter broadening being also discussed. We also derive conditions necessary for Langmuir-wave-caused dips/depressions to occur in the...

Potential Turbulence in Tokamak Plasmas

Microscopic potential turbulence in tokamak plasmas are investigated by a multi-samplevolume heavy ion beam probe. The wavenumber/frequency spectra S(k,ω) of the plasmas potential fluctuation as well as density fluctuation are obtained for the first time. The instantaneous turbulence-driven particle flux, calculated from potential and density turbulence has oscillations of which amplitude is ab...
